In 1868, Omura Domain joined forces with Satsuma Domain and Choushuu Domain to fight against the Shogunate during the Boshin War(Japanese civil war between imperial and shogunate forces). They obtained guns and rifles from the foreign merchants that did business in the Nagasaki area.Because Omura Domain helped win the Civil war,they received a reward of 30,000 koku.
Christians who had been hiding in the Urakami area of Omura Region were discovered and imprisoned during 1867. The ban on Christianity was turned over in 1873 and the people were released.
The abolishment of feudal domains in 1871 left the Omura Domain temporarily Omura Prefecture. Later, Omura prefecture merged with Nagasaki prefecture to become present day.
In 1872, the first elementary school, Fukushige Elementary School, was established.
In 1883, a group(Omura Kaishintou) of about 700 people created a constitutional reform party and developing a government system in Omura.
In 1895, The Omura Bay Pearl Industry Association was formed and Omura pearls became very popular. The first railroad through Omura and Omura Train Station opened in 1898.
In 1897, the 46th regiment, an army infantry, moved from Kumamoto to Omura because the Omura Family offered them the land to build a base. In 1916, a base was built for Japanese naval and air defense. At this time, Omura had the largest air base in Western Japan. In 1941, the 21 th navy and air Depot bulit a large factory for military war craft production and repair. Omura became the place where many military installations were developed.
In 1942, the 6 small “towns” of Omura joined together to form present day Omura City. The original six regions were the town of Omura and the villiages of Kayaze, Fukushige, Matsubara, Suzuta, and Miura.
After the 21 th navy and air depot was established, by 1943, the population of Omura increased to 67,728 people. The Pacific War (WWII) began in 1941. 1944 to 1945, Omura was a main target for the U.S. armed forces and experienced many air-raid attacks. When the atomic bomb was dropped over Nagasaki City, many injured people were brought to the Omura Naval Hospital (currently the National Hospital Nagasaki Medical Centar) for treatment.
