The Old Residence of Sensai Nagayo

Sensai Nagayo was born in 1838, in a house built by his grandfather in Kata-machi, Omura. This residence was taken out of Kata-machi and reconstructed on the premises of the National Hospital Organization Nagasaki Medical Center in Omura. His grandfather, a prominent doctor of the area, raised Sensai so he spent his childhood around the medical field.

Sensai studied at several places under several teachers, such as Gokoukan in Omura, the school for the royal Omura family; Tekijuku School of Medicine and Western Studies in Osaka under the founder and rangaku scholar (scholar of Western knowledge) Mr. Koan Ogata; and with the Dutch physician, Mr. J.L.C. Pompe van Meerdervoort, a Dutch physician in Nagasaki.

Sensai became the president of Nagasaki medical school, which is currently the Nagasaki University School of Medicine.
He went to Europe and United State as a member of the Iwakura Mission, and was the front runner to applying Western medical practices in Japan after returning. He laid the foundation for modern medicine in Japan.
